Besides the very popular definition of “project” in PMBOK that I showed in previous post : What is the project ? – by PMBOK , you can find below is an another definition. This is Simple project definition that I learned from a Project Management training course. This could help you easily to define/recognize a project. Basically, it should be the same with the definition from PMBOK or other books which you can find here if you want : Books for PMP Exam .
To me, the definition below is simple and easy to remember. It also provides the conditions that you recognize the project. But you should not only read but also need to do some workshops. I have some workshops/questions that you can practice here: Questions/Workshops for Project Management .
Definition :
A project is a set of complex activities, the goal of which is to satisfy the needs of the project’s sponsor.
A project always fulfills the following conditions:
1. It is unique.
2. It implies a certain degree of novelty.
3. There is a sponsor.
4. There is a project manager.
5. A goal has been set.
6. A schedule has been determined.
7. A budget has been prepared.
The following do not constitute a project:
1. Any repetitive operation.
2. Very small tasks. Many companies set a minimal cost under which a task may not be considered a project: for example, $50,000, or even $250,000. Other firms don’t apply such a limit.
If you still confused and need more examples, you can find useful questions/workshops that I regularly updated in below :
